Strauss’s elegant romance in Otto Schenk's iconic production
Strauss’s elegant romance brings the glamour and enchantment of 19th-century Vienna to the Met stage in a sumptuous production by legendary director Otto Schenk that “is as beautiful as one could hope” (The New York Times). Schenk’s opulent production provides a perfect setting for Strauss’s bittersweet comedy of true love and mistaken identity. Compelling soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen stars as Arabella, the daughter of an impoverished aristocrat who must marry a wealthy man to save her family. Tomasz Konieczny sings Mandryka, the landowner from the provinces who wins her over with his honesty and genuine charm in the midst of Viennese society. Louise Alder is Zdenka, Arabella’s younger sister, whose well-meaning actions cause all kinds of misunderstandings, and Pavol Breslik sings Matteo, Arabella’s suitor, who realizes he is really in love with Zdenka.
