FAUST

"As Faust, Jonas Kaufmann showed once again that he can sing just about any tenor part better than just about anyone else in the opera world… Even stronger was René Pape as the satanic Mephistopheles..."

New York Post

With Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, René Pape as the devil, and Marina Poplavskaya as Marguerite, Gounod’s classic retelling of the Faust legend couldn’t be better served. Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff updates the story to the first half of the 20th century with a production that won praise in London last season. His Faust is modeled on the real-life physicist Jacob Bronowski, who abandoned physics after the atom bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, and devoted himself from then on to humanism. Faust, the scientist and lover whose pact with the devil seems to lead to damnation, is redeemed in his final moments by his love for Marguerite.
