Giuseppe Verdi’s longstanding affinity for Shakespeare is explored in Adrian Noble's dark yet exhilarating vision for this disturbing work. Noble, former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, calls this opera “the greatest story Verdi ever told”. Noble’s Macbeth is set in the 20th century after World War II against a consistently spare and dark background, with the main focus on the sexually charged relationship between the Macbeths. The production, led by Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi, features a “luxurious cast” (Financial Times) starring Anna Netrebko in the vocally and dramatically demanding role of Lady Macbeth opposite Željko Lucic in the towering title role.
